‘Masti’ and ‘dhamaal’ begin David Dhawan ‘ishtyle’ as Sunidhi Chauhan modulates her voice considerably to come up with a foot-tapping ‘Mundeya’. The song is not a classic by any means when it comes to lyrical value, and this partially seductive partially naughty number falls under a guaranteed time-pass category. A regular girl-trying-to-invite-boy number, it should make for a good eye pleasing viewing as it has all it takes to excite the hoi-polloi. Things take a pacy turn for better with Akbar Sami coming up with his trademark DJ mix. No doubt it turns out to be much more catchy and exciting!

When seductive sighs of ‘Oh baby, come closer now’ mark a beginning to a song, you get an impression that ‘Ankhiyon Se Gal Kar Gayi’ is a whole hearted seductive number. This turns out to be a misconception when Sukhwinder Singh appears on the scene as he and Himesh Reshammiya turn it into a regular Punjabi dance number. The song is noticeable only for its heavy duty high bass but that’s about. Overall an average track with Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan as co-singers that may gain some popularity only if picturised well since musically it is ordinary. Just like ‘Mundeya’, ‘Ankhiyon Se Gal Kar Gayi’ too sounds much better in its remix version by Akbar Sami that comes with ‘dhol’ beats to make it an authentic Punjabi track.

Daler Mehendi and Himesh Reshammiya coming together – now that’s quite a handful. ‘Tuteya Ve’ makes it possible for the music lovers as Daler goes on to sing a love song in his own inimitable manner. Don’t expect a dance number from Daler this time around as the song moves at a moderate pace with some excellent music arrangements. As soon as you are halfway through the song, you wonder if a lounge version would have further enhanced its appeal. Now call it sheer coincidence as this is what happens when DJ Suketu version of the same song comes after a gap. Undoubtedly ‘Tuteya Ve’ is the best song of the enterprise so far.

A song for the interiors, ‘Bijuriya’ is a qawalli number with lyrics like ‘Gire Mujhpe Teri Ishq Ki Bijuriya’ with an extra stress on ‘Ishq’. Alka Yagnik is seemingly enjoying herself while coming up with an all-out effort while for a change someone of the caliber of Sukhwinder Singh takes a back seat. Though the beginning of the track is in a typical Himesh Reshammiya mode, it’s the portions thereafter that have a certain Subhash Ghai touch to them. Akbar Sami’s remix version adds in some extra beats to the proceedings but one would still prefer to go with the original.

A conventional love song that makes for a good ‘naach-gaana’ around the trees, ‘Tere Liye’ is one of your routine romantic tracks by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. Not bad but nothing that makes you go over the song again and again. Average! Remix version by Akbar Sami isn’t anything exciting either and the song can be forgotten soon after.

Album ends with a song with ‘Sache Aashiq’, a song with ample dose of ’shaava shaava’, ‘nachle’, ‘jind meriye’ and the stuff alike. Now that should be good enough to give a fair idea about what the song is all about as it falls under a typical Bollywood ‘bhangra’ dance number. Yet another okay track that doesn’t really make you jump with joy.

If you are looking for some trademark Himesh Reshammiya touch that he has perfected during last few months then you may not have too many reasons to cheer about as the songs belong to the pre-Aashiq Banaya Aapne era. ‘Shaadi Se Pehle’ has some average to above average to good songs with ‘Tuteya Ve’ being the pick of the lot followed by ‘Mundaya’ and ‘Bijuriya’.

Diana Shaw (Zoe Tapper) is an aspiring actress who wishes to follow in the footsteps of her celebrated mother Lily (Charlotte Lucas), who died tragically young while taking a standing ovation. Forced to be brought up in luxury in the country surrounded by insensitive cousins, Diana saves her pennies so that one day she may go to London and audition for something, anything really.

No sooner has she arrived than she bumps, literally, into a young playwright who, would you believe, spills the pages of his new play onto the ground. It is as they bend to pick up these pages that the youngsters gaze into each other’s eyes and you know the rest.

Handsome and ambitious, the young man, Robin (David Leon), soon has Diana ensconced in a nicely furnished room at the boarding house where he lives too. Their landlady is a woman of Scottish descent, Mrs. Abernathy (Julia McKenzie), who not only keeps theatrical posters on the walls of her home but also doesn’t mind at all when the dreamy-eyed young people fail to pay the rent. And she serves a fine pot of tea by the fire when it’s wet.

Robin is desperately keen to have his play produced and Diana is just as keen to star in it. This requires a producer, of course, and that can only mean the flamboyant American rich person Lottie Osgood (Anjelica Huston), who squanders her piles of inherited cash on any old rubbish.

To gain her attention, the sweethearts decide they need a star name and since nasty old cousin Garstin (Leo Bill) is best friends with matinee idol Douglas Middleton (Mark Umbers), that’s who they turn to. This is despite the fact that Garstin is a cast-iron Victorian swine of the first order who would twirl his mustache if only he had one.

As for Middleton, he turns out to be a gay blade with designs not on the nubile young Diana but on her vulnerable suitor, and soon they’re all up to their elegantly posed elbows in schemes and wicked wheezes that would make a stage doorman grin.

In fact one does, an elderly chap named Albert played by Joss Ackland who gets to tell Lauren Bacall, in a cameo as an ageing English actress named Dame Lydia, how beautiful she remains. She does too.

Meanwhile. Actually there are several meanwhiles. One of them involves Christopher Lovell (Andrew Lincoln), an actor turned director who, if you last that long, turns out to be a Battle of Britain pilot.

Another has Terence Stamp in a baffling role as a World War One veteran who used to be rich but lost his wealth in the great stock market crash and now works as a butler but is also Lottie Osgood’s showbiz advisor, musical director and possible lover.

At least the two of them appear to be enjoying themselves.

A new way to pronounce ‘Jawani’ is heard in the title song ‘Jawani Diwani’ that is sung as ‘Ja-Waa-Ni Diwani’ and is highly catchy as soon as you have heard the first few seconds of it. It is THE kind of number that has been popular throughout the year, i.e. a peppy youthful track with an attitude to match. Also the trend of having English lyrics incorporated into a song is taken further with ‘Jawani Diwani’ having liberal doses of English. A song that has Clinton Cerejo as the guest composer, it is sung by newcomer Bobby Moon who brings on the characteristics required for a song of this genre. Good picturisation and striking locations help making the song a complete package.

Just like ‘Kaho Na Kaho’ [Murder], even ‘Dil Diwana’ has some portions of the song rendered in a middle-east language. Hamza sings this party of the track while for the majority of song Sonu Nigam and Sowmya Raoh hold the center stage. The number is sort of a fusion track between middle-east and contemporary Hindi film music with some western effects thrown in. Though the singing is fine, the song lacks the fire that could capitulate it to the top of the charts. A conventional number with not much that could make a listener go for the album.

Composers Sidharth-Suhas, whose compositions were also heard in recently released ‘The Film’ make an appearance as guest composers for Jawani Diwani. Sung by Suhaas, the track ‘Sini Ne Sini Ne’ changes the graph of the album completely after a rather average ‘Dil Diwana’. The track appears in two versions, the other being remixed by Sajid Wajid and the two versions can be conveniently considered as a lounge and club version respectively. The more one hears the two tracks, the more one ends up falling for them as the songs have a lovely rhythm with a new voice that impresses. A good addition to your music collection this year, ‘Sini Ne’ is simply mesmerizing. With Emraan in the movie, one can be sure that the song would be presented quite well on screen.

Rahul Saxena, Shadaab Faridi and Arif Shaikh are the three men who get together for ‘Tere Ishq Mein’, a Sufi track that again takes an conventional route. After a rocking ‘Sini Ne’, it is difficult to change your mood for ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ and one rather waits for this situational track to pass by soon. One gets the same feeling when ‘Jiska Mujhe Intezaar’ is played on. Rendered by K.K. with Suzaan giving background vocals intermittently, the song belongs to dard-e-judaai genre with the difference being that is is fast paced with western beats complimenting it throughout. Though the singing is fine, its average tune that makes one loose interest in the proceedings.

Remember ‘Main Teri Mohabbat Mein Paagal Ho Jayoonga’ from ‘Tridev’? ‘Yaad Teri Yaad’ seemingly takes inspiration from the track and this time around is sung by Indian Idol Abhijit Sawant and Shreya Ghoshal. A track that doesn’t try to be any different but follows the tried and tested path of Indian melody, it is pleasant on ears. Another striking factor about the song is that Abhijeet’s vocals have started suiting the playback singing mode better with every outing of his and it won’t be surprising to soon hear him singing many more Bollywood tracks to come!

‘Dilruba’ is the sole female solo of ‘Jawani Diwani’ is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. As per the trend of the album, a good and an average song have come almost back to back and ‘Dilruba’ re-establishes the trend. After a fine ‘Yaad Teri Yaad’, ‘Dilruba’ is an item song that is strictly average and is one of the many hundred such numbers heard in recent times. You have heard and seen so many ‘dance bar’ or Shipa Shetty numbers like this in last few months that you are just disappointed with the final outcome.

‘Jawani Diwani’ is Emraan Hashmi’s one-off flick that doesn’t seem to be on the path of a best seller score. In the end, it is just the title song and ‘Sini Ne’ that stay with you.
